Sculpty vs SPAR3D

SPAR3D reconstructs a mesh from a single image in under a second, with open weights you can download and a licence that permits commercial use. It is one of the most impressive things in this directory, and it is a model rather than a product — which is the whole comparison.

Verdict

SPAR3D wins on speed by an order of magnitude and on cost of ownership if you already run GPUs: no per-generation charge, no vendor, weights you keep. Its point-cloud conditioning also gives editing control the commercial engines do not expose. What you get with Sculpty instead is a product: text prompts, five engines, multi-view, texturing, remesh, renders, worlds, a gallery, print ordering, and nothing to deploy. If you have an ML team, SPAR3D may be the better foundation. If you want to make something this afternoon, it is not close.

Sculpty runs five engines, not one

Every engine answers the same prompt box. When one misreads what you asked for, switching costs a dropdown instead of another subscription.

Pros & cons

Both sides, fairly.

Sculpty logoSculpty
Pros
  • Five AI 3D engines in one studio — pick the best one per prompt instead of being locked to a single model
  • The whole pipeline after generation: AI texturing, remesh and retopology, photoreal renders, explorable 3D worlds
  • Export GLB, STL, OBJ, PLY and glTF, plus native FBX, USDZ and 3MF on Meshy generations
  • Free format converters and a browser 3D viewer, no sign-up required
  • Order a physical 3D print of any model without leaving the app
  • Free plan to try every engine, then $14/mo
Cons
  • No public API yet — Sculpty is a studio, not an engine you can call from your own code
  • No auto-rigging or animation tooling
  • Younger platform than the engines it runs, with a smaller community
SPAR3D
Pros
  • Sub-second reconstruction — the fastest thing in this list by an order of magnitude
  • Open weights under a licence that permits commercial use
  • Point-cloud conditioning gives real editing control over the reconstruction
  • Predicts complete object structure, including the parts the photo does not show
Cons
  • A model, not a product: no gallery, no account, no support
  • Image input only — no text prompts, no multi-view
  • Self-hosting means GPUs and engineering time
  • No texturing, remesh, render or world tooling

The cost that does not appear on either pricing page

Open weights are free the way a puppy is free. You need GPUs with enough memory, an inference service, monitoring, someone to update it, and a viewer to look at the output — and none of that produces a single asset until it is finished. That investment pays off at volume or when you need to modify the model itself. Below that threshold, a hosted studio on credits is dramatically cheaper in the only currency that matters, which is your time.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Is SPAR3D really free for commercial use?+

The weights are published under Stability AI's Community License, which permits commercial and non-commercial use. You supply the compute, or pay for their hosted API.

Can SPAR3D take a text prompt?+

No — single image only. Sculpty runs four text-to-3D engines.
