Slicers speak STL. OBJ files from marketplaces, sculpting apps and photogrammetry carry UVs and material references that a 3D printer cannot use — and some slicers refuse or mangle OBJ input. Converting to STL strips the model down to exactly what printing needs: watertight triangle geometry.
Conversion preserves the mesh as-is; it does not repair it. For a clean print the source mesh should be manifold (watertight, no holes or self-intersections). If your slicer reports errors after conversion, run its built-in repair or a tool like Meshmixer — the issue lives in the source geometry, not the format change.
