PLY is a scanning and processing format; OBJ is a modeling format. While modern Blender imports PLY directly, plenty of tools and pipelines — ZBrush workflows, marketplace uploads, game-asset toolchains, older importers — expect OBJ. Converting gives the scan a universal passport into modeling software, where you'd typically retopologize and texture it.
Standard OBJ has no official slot for per-vertex color, so a colored scan converts as geometry only. If the color matters downstream, two options: keep the PLY alongside (tools like Blender can import it directly), or convert to GLB instead — glTF carries vertex colors natively and imports into modern DCC tools.
