3D scanning

Polycam explained.

Polycam is the reference point for 3D scanning: point a phone at a real object or room and get a textured 3D model back. It also ships an AI material generator that produces photoreal PBR maps from a text prompt. It answers a question generators cannot — how do I get *this actual thing* into 3D.

What it does well, and where it stops.

Polycam
Pros
  • The most polished capture experience on a phone, with LiDAR support
  • Captures spaces as well as objects
  • AI material generator produces full PBR map sets from a prompt
  • Free tier, with a large community and plenty of tutorials
Cons
  • It can only reproduce things that exist — no invention from a prompt
  • Scan meshes are dense and usually need retopology before production use
  • No render studio, no generation engines, no print ordering

Scan or generate?

The question answers itself once you know where the object is. If it is in front of you and you need a faithful copy, scanning wins every time — no prompt describes a specific chair as well as photographing it. If it only exists in your head, scanning is useless and a generator is the only option. A common workflow uses both: scan the real object, then use Sculpty's remesh to cut the dense capture down to something workable and its render studio to present it.

FAQ

Polycam, answered.

Is scanning better than AI generation?+

For real objects you have access to, yes — a scan is a measurement, not a guess. For anything imagined, generation is the only option. They are complementary rather than competing.

Can I clean up a Polycam scan in Sculpty?+

Yes. Import the exported mesh into Sculpty's remesh studio to reduce and retopologise it, retexture it, or composite it into a photoreal render.
